13 Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Tips

It’s a hot topic, and everyone has ideas on the best ways to optimize your blog.  After doing some research, I’ve compiled a list of the things I think are the most important to getting higher page rankings and more visitors.  Ready?  And…here…we…GO!

Keep your homepage simple, but informative.  Ease of use is key to repeat visitors and longer visit times.

Use colors that are easy on the eyes.  Make sure the background and font color contrast greatly.  Use tools like [tag]Color Wizard[/tag] to pick matching colors, or [tag]WhatsItsColor[/tag] to find the color of a site or image you see (obviously, you don’t want copy their site, but you can use this to find the exact colors you like).

Keep [tag]posts[/tag] short and organized.  This is where I mess up.  I tend to ramble when blogging, and I’ve noticed that my most popular posts are those that contain [tag]lists[/tag] and short, detailed information.

Download [tag]SimpleTags[/tag] and use it.  It lets you add [tag]Technorati[/tag] tags to your posts as you write and displays them at the bottom of each post.

Unless necessary, stay away from flash video and special effects, at least on your homepage.  Indexers do not, for the most part, see these and are much more accommodating of text.  Also remember that not everyone is using a computer as fast as yours, and not everyone has the same internet connection speed.  Keep in mind that viewers may have limited privileges on their computer (ie, school or work computers), so they may not be able to view all the media you use.

[tag]UPDATE[/tag], UPDATE, UPDATE your site constantly.

Use descriptive, albeit succinct titles for posts and pages.

If you are using [tag]Wordpress[/tag], or some other [tag]blogging[/tag] software, try to structure your permalinks so that they are descriptive, using the post title instead of ID numbers.

Don’t over-advertise your site.

Link to other sites, in hopes that they will link to you.  The more sites you are linked on, the more times you are returned in search results, and the more clicks you will get.

Avoid changing, deleting, or moving your domain name, posts, or pages.

Make sure you have no deadlinks.

Have a good 404 Error! page.

Hopefully these will help you get higher rankings in search engines, which will result in more traffic to your blog.  If you have any more suggestions, feel free to leave a comment below.
